EVA (ethyl vinyl acetate) foam is a great material for laser cutting as it cuts very clean and because it is lightweight we can cut through usually at least two inches of it before the beam goes out of focus. Also despite the name containing the word vinyl it doesn’t contain chlorine which is usually the big problem with cutting what is commonly called vinyl, usually vinyl does contain chlorine which makes hydrochloric acid which is a big bummer for LOLA and everyone in the area with mucous membranes 🙂 Generally it is the material we can cut the thickest sheets of so if that is the main concern it is a good choice. Cosplayers know of its goodness and the ease that it can be crafted into amazing props and costumes and because it is very lightweight it holds together well, even in a large assembly. EVA foam can also be used to help soundproof a space, and can be cut into patterns to diffuse the sound and help make a more “dead” space for recording or streaming/soundbooth purposes.
