Leather can be laser cut/engraved to great effect, however it will depend on the composition of the leather itself and the chemicals that were used in the curing process as well as the thickness and the color of the leather, generally for cutting the top surface will stay relatively clean while the back will get some scorching, however for light colors and thinner leather or suede the discoloration may be more noticeable so it’s best to test a scrap first.
Laser cutting can minimize the amount of material wasted by being able to nest pieces extremely close together, reducing material costs.
Laser cutting tiny holes for sewing in thicker, tougher leather like belt or boot leather is a great use of the laser, please save your hands and let the laser do the work for you! 🙂
Also it is really important to make sure the leather you are cutting is actual leather and not synthetic as that usually contains chlorine which is really bad for Lola and our eyeballs!
Engraving leather can also yield good results, make sure to use a thicker leather so the engraving doesn’t make the result too thin.
Cut or engraved leather will smell for a while, that’s just how it goes with burning leather folks 🙂
