MDF Wood

MDF or medium density fiberboard can be cut very cleanly if the right material is sourced. For 3mm (1/8″) and 6mm (1/4″) MDF most any supplier’s material cuts ok but at thicker thicknesses we generally use Ultralight MDF and only particular manufacturers as the glue they use can contribute to the material catching fire easily. With the right manufacturer it is possible to get very fine detail from the material at a significant thickness and a cheap price. We usually recommend using MDF as a replacement for plywood as it cuts much more consistently, can take paint better as it is pre-sanded and is generally cheaper. It is a good material for indoor use, for exterior use it would need to be completely sealed as the glue used is not made for outdoor exposure to sun and moisture. We stock MDF that works, however it can be frustrating as often the distributors will change their manufacturers without letting the distributors know and then you get a pile of MDF that just wants to turn into a flaming pile in the cutting bed so when we find MDF that works we buy a lot.
